Pastor Carl Johnson was born September 23, 1960, in Miami, Florida to the late Hattie M. Johnson and late Fernie Johnson Sr. In the late 1960’s, he joined 93rd Street Community Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Alonzo Anderson. At the age of seven, he had begun to participate in church activities.
He graduated from Miami Central Senior High School in 1978. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Miami, and was hired by the U.S. Postal Service as a Letter Carrier.
He was promoted to supervisor in 1986, and later an Acting Manager before resigning in 1996. He attended Miami Dade Community College and the University of Maryland. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Jacksonville Theological Seminary. In addition, he received an Honorary Doctor’s Degree from St. Thomas Christian College. Recently, a graduate from Florida Memorial University in Religion and Philosophy.
In 1987, he was called and received ministerial licensed at 93rd Street Community Baptist Church. He was appointed youth minister and an Assistant to the Senior Pastor. After the death of Rev. Alonzo Anderson, he became the interim Pastor. On May 16, 1993, he was installed as Senior Pastor. God gave him a vision for the 93rdSt. Baptist Church, “The church being faithful to become fruitful”, under-girded with the mission statement, “The Church Where the Holy Spirit Leads and the Body of Christ Follows”. Under his leadership the church has grown from 100 to 7000 members. The old sanctuary was renovated in 1996, and the church purchased numerous properties in the surrounding area. In December 2007, the church moved adjacent to a beautiful new cathedral of approximately 1500 seating capacity which includes administrative offices, bookstore, conference room, and a chapel. Due to the rapid growth many more ministries have been added.
Pastor Johnson served as the President of the Caretaker for Christ Incorporation; served as the President of the Ministers & Deacons Union of the Seaboard Baptist Association. In 2018, he was appointed the President of the Moderators Axillary of the Florida General Baptist Convention. Presently, he serves as the Moderator of the Seaboard Baptist Association for the past seven (7) years. He was newly elected on April 6, 2023, as the 24th President of the Florida General Baptist Convention. Currently, he serves as a Chaplain for the Florida Highway Patrol Department and Chaplain for the Doral Police Department. He serves as the President of the 93rd St. Community Development (social services) since 1999.
Pastor Johnson is married to Esther Roundtree-Johnson since 1990, and has three children, Carl Jr., Isaiah, and Faith.
